Nam Theun 2 Power Project Press Release
September 14, 2006 - As progress continues on the Nam Theun 2 Power Project in Khammouane Province changes continue to occur in the lives of resettled villagers. Approximately 6,000 people living in 18 affected villages are in the process of moving to newly-constructed homes located beyond the boundaries of a future reservoir.

There are more than 100 landmine and/or UXO affected countries in the world. Approximately 20 of these are heavily affected. Landmines and UXO instill a sense of terror and pose an immediate threat to affected populations by restricting access to markets, schools, agricultural land, water sources, and inflicting injuries and death.

Clearance Planning
If you are preparing to work in the field some preventative steps can be taken to avoid putting your staff at risk. In comparison to the consequences of suffering an explosive related accident, the following steps have proven to be cost effective and worthwhile:
- Survey / needs assessment
- Desktop Survey - a compilation of all available known data in an area and;
- Physical Survey - Gathering available data via interviews and consultation with local villagers and take physical readings of the ground.
- Training / mines/UXO awareness
- PCL can develop and provide customised training to key staff on operations in a landmine/UXO environment.
- Area Search, Clearance and Demolitions
- Pysical search with electronic mine/UXO detectors and computerised magnetometers. Clearance and demolition of all hazardous items, and in a mined environment, 99% metal free clearance.
